Building History

The general store was built in 1888 for James Owen and Mary Lumley. James was a descendent of Thomas Lumley, who emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1774.

In 1906 a part of this building was the location for the Dunwich and Southwold Telephone Association office and switchboard. The operator was anyone in the Lumley family who heard the ring. Edna Lumley, daughter of J.O., was one of the early operators and remained so for 26 years: "I used to stand on a box to reach the phone. It's funny now, but when we first had the phone, everyone thought they had to shout into it to be heard."

Lumley operated the store until 1915, when his son W.G. Lumley assumed proprietorship. A service garage and gas station were added to the west side of the building, possibly about this time.

A post office had been in several locations in lona before it came to the J.O. Lumley store in 1918.

Katnap is an eclectic antique shop located in the historic Lumley & Co. general store, built in 1888 in a Moorish Revival style. The building is located in the hamlet of Iona and is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act as a structure of architectural interest.

The second floor of the building hosts a bed & breakfast establishment. Rooms may be booked through Airbnb, or Mister B&B.

The proprietor, Laurence Grant, is a former curator and museum director, who also had an antique shop in Montreal.
